As part of our 40‑year anniversary celebrations, Bitterne United Reformed Church was delighted to receive a heartfelt letter from the former Lord Mayor of Southampton, Cllr James Baillie. Written during his time in office, his message offers warm congratulations and recognises the role our church has played in the Bitterne community over the past four decades.

Cllr Baillie’s words reflect the values that continue to shape our life together: faith, friendship, welcome and service. For 40 years, our building has been a place where people gather, support one another, explore faith, and work together for the good of Bitterne and Southampton.

Receiving this letter as we mark such a significant milestone is a meaningful reminder of how deeply our church’s presence is woven into local life. We’re grateful for the encouragement, and for everyone — past and present — who has helped shape Bitterne URC into the community it is today.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to offering a warm welcome, supporting our neighbours, and continuing to grow as a place of hope and connection in Bitterne.

Dear Friends at Bitterne URC,

I was delighted to learn that Bitterne United Reformed Church is celebrating 40 years in Bitterne Precinct. Please accept my warmest congratulations on reaching this wonderful milestone.

Forty years of faithful presence in the heart of the community is a remarkable achievement. Throughout that time, the church has not just been a place of worship but a welcoming centre for local people, providing friendship, support, and opportunities for the community to come together.

I was fortunate enough to be able to join the Bitterne History Society (which you so kindly hosted) for one of its meetings. I found the evening absolutely fascinating, particularly seeing photographs and hearing stories of Bitterne before the bypass was built and before the church was relocated to its current home in the Precinct. It was a wonderful reminder of how our communities evolve over time, while institutions such as Bitterne URC continue to provide continuity, service, and hope.

I hope your programme of anniversary celebrations throughout the year is tremendous success, bringing together past and present members friends, neighbours, and all those whose lives have been touched by the church over the past four decades.
