A place to belong. A community to grow with.

Whether you’re exploring faith, reconnecting with church, or ready to take the next step, you’re warmly invited to journey with us. At Bitterne URC, membership is about belonging, shared purpose, and walking together in faith.
Why Become a Member?
Becoming a member is a way of saying:
“This is my church family, and I want to be part of its shared life, worship, and mission.”
Membership means:
- Growing in faith alongside others
- Sharing your gifts, time and prayers
- Helping shape the life and direction of our church
- Belonging to the wider United Reformed Church
You don’t need to have everything figured out — just a desire to follow Jesus and be part of a caring community.

There are three ways to become a member at Bitterne URC:
1. Confirmation
For those who have been baptised (as a child or adult) and now wish to make their own public declaration of faith.
- Takes place during a Sunday Communion service
- You’ll be asked simple questions affirming your faith
- The whole church promises to support you
- You receive a certificate of confirmation
2. Reaffirmation of Faith
For those who have previously been a member of another Christian denomination.
- You reaffirm your faith in Father, Son and Holy Spirit
- Welcomed into membership during a Communion service
3. Transfer of Membership
For those already on the membership roll of another URC.
- A simple transfer process
- Welcomed during a Communion service
Membership isn’t about rules — it’s about shared life.
We believe God blesses each of us with time, talents and treasure, and invites us to use them for the good of others.
As a member, you’re encouraged to:
- Take part in worship and prayer
- Support the church’s life and mission
- Share your gifts in ways that suit your abilities and circumstances
- Attend church meetings when you can
- Give financially as you’re able (no one is asked to give beyond their means)
We understand life is busy and finances are stretched — your presence, prayers, and kindness matter just as much as anything else.
Do I need to be baptised to be confirmed?
Yes. If you haven’t been baptised, a service of baptism and confirmation can be arranged.
Can I be a member of another church at the same time?
Membership at Bitterne URC means committing to the shared life and ministry of this church community.
What level of time or financial commitment is expected?
We recognise that people have busy lives and many responsibilities. You are invited to give what you can — no more than you are able.

What Happens Next?

2. Ask any questions
We’re here to help — no question is too small.
3. Prepare for the service
