A gentle, welcoming space to honour a life with love and hope
At Bitterne United Reformed Church, we offer funeral, memorial, and thanksgiving services that hold space for grief, celebrate a life lived, and affirm the Christian hope of God’s everlasting love.
Whether you have a strong faith, a quiet hope, or simply want a peaceful place to remember someone special, you are warmly welcome.
How We Support You
We know that planning a funeral can feel overwhelming. Our ministers and Elders team are here to offer pastoral support and walk with you – gently, compassionately, and at your pace.
We can help you plan:
-
A Funeral Service in the church sanctuary
-
A Service at a crematorium or graveside
-
A Thanksgiving or Memorial Service held after a burial or cremation
Every service is shaped around your loved one’s story, values, and personality. We work closely with local funeral directors, crematoria, and cemeteries to ensure everything is coordinated smoothly and respectfully.
You are not alone – we will guide you through each step with care.
Most families choose to hold the service in our church sanctuary, a calm and beautiful space for reflection, music, and remembrance.
Although Bitterne URC does not have its own burial grounds, we have strong relationships with local crematoria and cemeteries. We are very happy to liaise with funeral directors so that the whole day flows with dignity and ease.
Many families choose:
- Service in the church, followed by
- Committal at a crematorium or graveside
This offers both the comfort of a familiar worship space and the practical support of local facilities.

We can also help you plan a later thanksgiving or memorial service, especially if family members are travelling or if you prefer a more reflective gathering after the funeral.
Grief doesn’t end with the service. Our pastoral team is here for you in the weeks and months that follow – whether you’d like prayer, a listening ear, or simply someone to sit with you.
You are always welcome at our Sunday services, community events, or just to drop in for a chat.
Do we need to be church members? No. We serve the whole community, and everyone is welcome.
Can the service include non‑religious readings or music? Yes. We can blend Christian worship with poems, songs, or tributes that reflect your loved one’s life.
Can we bring photos, flowers, or personal items? Absolutely. Many families bring flowers, a favourite object, or a framed photo. We can also display a slideshow of up to 30 images.
Is there a fee? There is no fixed charge for ministry support. Donations towards the church’s work are appreciated but never expected.
