A warm, joyful welcome for your little one.
Welcome to this special moment

Thank you for considering Bitterne URC as the place to celebrate your child’s arrival. Whether you’re thinking about baptism or a blessing, we’re delighted to share this moment with you.
Here we will help to explain the difference between the two services and helps you think about the promises you may wish to make.
Our minister and elders are always happy to answer questions and guide you through the next steps.
Both baptism and blessing are joyful celebrations of your child’s life.
Neither involves “magic words” — what matters most is the love, care, and commitment you offer your child as they grow.
Baptism
Baptism welcomes your child into the worldwide Christian family
- Involves water poured three times in the name of Father, Son & Holy Spirit
- Takes place during a Sunday service (usually the 4th Sunday of the month)
- You make promises to raise your child in the Christian faith and in the fellowship of the church
- You receive a baptism certificate
- Baptism happens once in a lifetime
Blessing (Thanksgiving & Dedication)
A blessing is a service of giving thanks for your child
- No water is used
- Usually during a Sunday service, but Saturday options may be possible
- You promise to surround your child with Christian love and care
- You receive a certificate of Thanksgiving, Dedication & Blessing
What about “Christening”?
We no longer use the term “Christening”. Baptism is the Christian sacrament; blessing is a thanksgiving service.
Do we need to be married?
No. We simply ask that parents or partners are committed to raising their child in a loving, stable home. A partner may make promises with you, whether or not they are the biological parent.
Do we need to live locally?
No — but baptism includes a promise to bring your child up “in the fellowship of the church.” If another church is closer to where you live, you may wish to consider having the service there.
Do we need to attend services beforehand?
We encourage you to come along to a few Sunday services (10.30am) so you can get to know the church family before the baptism or blessing.
Do we need godparents?
No. Some families choose close friends or relatives to make a promise during the service, but it’s entirely optional.

Next Steps
1. Think about which service feels right for your family
Baptism involves Christian promises and joining the church family. Blessing is a thanksgiving service without those commitments.
2. Contact our minister
They’ll arrange a relaxed visit to talk through the service, the promises, and any questions you may have.
3. Plan the date
Most services take place during Sunday worship at 10.30am, but blessings may sometimes be arranged for a Saturday.
4. For older children or adults
If you are 12+ or an adult interested in baptism, please speak to the minister — we’d love to support you. We look forward to celebrating with you.
