About us

Bitterne United Reformed Church is part of the Southern Fellowship consisting of 6 United Reformed Churches: Abbey, Avenue St Andrews, Bitterne, Bitterne Park, Braishfield, and Isaac Watts.

About the Area

Our Church is sited in Bitterne, a busy suburb of Southampton.  Located in the local Bitterne shopping precinct in a unique position above an arcade of shops. The Red Lion public house, Wetherspoons, is opposite the Church where good community links have been forged.  There is a leisure centre with swimming pool which is near to the library and Christ the King Roman Catholic Church.  The local parish Church of the Holy Saviour is Anglican and a welcome next door neighbour.  Bitterne URC enjoys good working and social relations with the local churches as part of Churches Together in Bitterne, which we help to organise community events in Bitterne.

Our History

The original Church building was built on the corner of the High Street and Chapel Street (later Dean Road) in 1897, and it became the United Reformed Church in 1971. It was then demolished in 1982 to make way for major road improvements in the area. The original church’s foundation stone was preserved and built into the new United Reformed Church in Bitterne Precinct, opened in 1986 and marking 40 years in 2026.

The Church has rooms available for hire during the week Monday to Friday and is already used by a variety of organisations.  Bitterne URC boasts a good reputation in respect of Health and Safety and cleanliness.

We are a welcoming and caring church with oversight for all members and friends carried out chiefly but not exclusively by the Elders.
